Vanessa + Graeme – Adamson Estate Engagement

I had such a hard time narrowing down Vanessa and Graeme’s photos because I had SO many cute ones of them laughing together- I just couldn’t choose! We went to Adamson Estate for their session and even though the main building is under renovation, we still had a blast and found lots of spots to take photos. Vanessa made a beautiful ombré glitter champagne bottle for our shoot, and I always have to laugh watching reactions when couples pop open a bottle. Special thanks to Vanessa’s sister Sara for coming along and making us all laugh!
    Enjoy!

Jacquelynn + Kevin – Caledon Engagement

I’m already looking forward to Jacquelynn and Kevin’s vineyard wedding in October! These two love good food and drink, and are also really into sports and working out (mainly lacrosse) so we get along just fine! I was so impressed with these two in front of the camera- they were so cute! They say they aren’t really a ‘touchy feely’ kind if couple (which is something that so many couples tell me all the time!) but you could have fooled me!

Leighton & Derek – Bolton Engagement

Leighton and Derek are less than 1 month away from becoming husband and wife and I couldn’t be happier that I’ll be the one documenting their big day! Derek and I used to work together and we bonded over our love of CrossFit, and Leighton is just the sweetest girl with the BEST dimples I have ever seen. So happy for you two! We did their engagement session in Bolton and I loved that they incorporated pretty pinks for Leighton and some baseball for Derek.

    Enjoy!

  • What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos – featuring Dawna + Matt, Wasaga Beach Engagement

What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos – featuring Dawna + Matt, Wasaga Beach Engagement

I get asked about this, a lot. What should we wear? Where should we do them? What do we bring? I have a big, detailed list that I usually email to clients about a month before their engagement session, and now I’m happy to have all of this info in one place where everyone can access it! In case you missed my previous post about why I think engagement photos are important, click here!

Keep in mind, that all of these are tips and suggestions based on my experiences over the years, and are in no way meant to be viewed as a set of rules. Some of these items you may already be aware of, some you may not have even thought about. Hopefully this post helps when you’re prepping for your engagement session!

    What should we wear?
    1. You guys want to be comfortable, first and foremost! Stay true to yourselves and your style. Showcase your style and personality, but consider ‘amping’ this up as well. Don’t forget that I’ll be photographing your whole body!

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_032

    2. Accessorize: shoes, belts, jewellery, and hats don’t want to be overlooked, as they can really pull together an outfit and make it look complete.

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_04

    3. Try to avoid clashing, super bright colours, but sometimes a bright accessory or statement piece looks great. Avoid too much black, but sometimes a little black dress can be perfect!

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_09

    4. A tip for the groom! Big plaid and larger patterns photograph better than ‘small plaid’ or stripes. Cameras have a hard time interpreting really small patterns and stripes (this particularly applies to men’s dress shirts). Also, this could be a great opportunity to buy a new shirt- go for something more fitted, since the camera makes everything look baggier than it really is! Swap out those flip flops for real shoes…and grab some nice jeans while you’re at it! Dad jeans…why do you even have those?!

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_016

    5. When thinking about your two outfits, consider perhaps one dressy outfit, and one thats a bit more casual. Look at your outfits side by side- make sure you guys are on the same level in terms of ‘formalness’ and that they are complimentary to each other. Dawna and Matt started with their most formal outfit, a long black maxi for Dawna and a dinner jacket for Matt. From there, they switched to a semi-casual outfit- a t-shirt and skirt for Dawna, and cargo shorts and long sleeve plaid shirt (see the large plaid!?) for Matt. Typically, 2 outfits is plenty but these guys were quick with their changing so it was totally fine! Dawna made a flower crown for herself and wanted to pair it with a pretty white maxi dress, and then after that we headed down to the water to do some fun football shots, so Dawna and Matt did a few quick shots in their most casual outfit-  jean shorts and a light beachy sweater. Notice how their outfits look great together because they paid attention to how formal they were in comparison to the other, and they also incorporated a lot of neutral colours, with accessories.

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_038

    6. Consider incorporating your wedding colours somehow- even with just an accessory- it can help tie in Save the Dates or Guest Signing photo books!

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_018

    7. I usually do a shot of your hands to show the ring, so keep that in mind in case your nails need some love!

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_028

    8. This is a perfect day to schedule your wedding hair and makeup trial, if you were planning on having them. Professional hair and makeup can make you feel like a million bucks, and that confidence really shows through in photographs. Even just a visit to your stylist for a wash and blow out can make the world of difference. If you are doing your own makeup, take note that light, everyday makeup doesn’t show up super well, so consider applying a little bit more than usual! Dawna is a professional makeup artist, so she had this one in the bag! But you can see how professional application really shows up well in the photographs, and she looks flawless.

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_037

Where should we take our engagement photos?
This is completely up to you! But if you’re stuck for ideas then I can definitely help you brainstorm. If there is a place that is meaningful to you as a couple (for example, where you had your first date, where he proposed, a park that you go for runs in together, etc) then that could be a great place to start. I love shooting in open fields and tall grass, by the water, trails and natural areas! If you would like to explore more than one location, I am totally game but try to keep the two spots fairly close together so that we can spend more time shooting and less time driving! Dawna and Matt met on this beach many years ago, so we chose this as their location! It helps that its so picturesque and has one of my favourite things- beach grass!

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_022

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_039

    What should we bring?
Props can be fun to bring along but are definitely not needed. Some popular items include a picnic blanket, champagne, flower bouquet, etc! Anything that represents you as a couple or the things you like to do together. Having something to interact with other than just each other is really helpful and can take the pressure off! Dawna thought to bring along a vintage jewellery box for shots with her engagement ring.

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_011

Pets can certainly be a part of your session, but I require that you bring a ‘pet handler’ to watch them and hold the leash, or take them home when they are not involved in the photo. We usually spend about 10 minutes at the beginning of the session with your pet and then they can head home with your pet sitter!

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_014

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_010

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_024

Arrive hydrated and on a full stomach! Nothing will make a session spiral downwards into a ‘hangry’ mess faster than a hungry man (sorry guys…you are usually the culprit of this!) Have some water and something to eat beforehand, and if you think you won’t last 2-3 hours, bring a quick granola bar and a water bottle!

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_021

When should we schedule our session?
There is no set timeline in terms of how far in advance you need to have your engagement photos done. Sometimes I have couples who do them more than a year in advance of their wedding (if they’ve booked me early), and sometimes its just a few months before. I would try to schedule it sooner rather than later, with a minimum of two months before your wedding date. If your wedding is in January-June, I would recommend doing your photos the year before. If it is in July-December, we can do it earlier the same year if you like.

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_029

In the summer months, I schedule the sessions to start in the evening, usually between 5pm-6pm. The light at this time of day is ideal for shooting outdoors, as it gets that soft, beautiful golden feel to it. We will wrap up right before sunset. I recommend not making any concrete plans for right after your shoot, as we don’t want to feel rushed. Its a great night to plan a nice dinner date with your fiancé, since you guys will be all dressed up anyway!

    Kavanagh_DawnaMatt_034

And thats it! Hopefully you’ll find these helpful. If you have any other tips you think would be worth mentioning, leave me a note in the comments and I’ll add it to the list!

Brittany + Kyle – Rattlesnake Point, Milton Engagement

Brittany and Kyle will be tying the knot next year and I am already looking forward to it! We picked a great day to wander the streets of downtown Milton- as we emerged from some of the side street alleys that I so love to shoot in, we landed in the thick of the Downtown Milton Street Fair! We found our way out of the chaos and headed towards the peaceful walls at the Old Town Hall. After that, we drove to Rattlesnake Point for a picnic with champagne, hopped a hay bale, and hiked to a beautiful spot overlooking Milton’s farms- a spot that is very special to Brittany and Kyle, as that is where he popped the question.
    Enjoy!

  • Why You Should Do An Engagement Session – ft Jennifer + Brad, High Park Engagement

Why You Should Do An Engagement Session – ft Jennifer + Brad, High Park Engagement

I’ve had such a great couple of weeks lately, partially due to the fact that they’ve been filled with engagement sessions! I get asked quite a bit about why I think engagement photos are important, so I thought I’d talk a bit about that today. I love doing these sessions because it gives me a chance to get to know you before the wedding day. Often, our first meeting is all about wedding details and feeling out if we are a good fit for each other. At your session is when I get to hear about how you met, how he proposed, what you’re planning for your honeymoon, and so on. On top of that, its a great opportunity for you and your fiancé to get comfortable in front of the camera, and then you’ll know exactly what to expect when it comes to portrait time during the wedding day. Ideally, you don’t want your first time in front of the camera together to be during a short 45 minute portrait session on your wedding day! Another very common concern is the ‘my groom doesn’t want to do them. Like, not interested, AT ALL.’ I try to make these sessions as fun as I can, and after every single one, the guys always say how easy it was, how much fun they had, and that they’re glad they did it. I think a lot of guys think that it will be 2 straight hours of looking at the camera with a fakes smile plastered on, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! They get to spend 2 hours looking at you, kissing you, and holding you- what guy wouldn’t love that! A lot of couples use their engagement photos for a variety of things- save the dates, guest signing books, decor at showers and the wedding (think table numbers, and cake tables) and the list goes on. Plus, its really nice to have professional photos of yourselves to hang in your home. Your engagement is usually 6 months to a year long, and its a special time in your lives together. Your wedding day is a part of that story, but the months leading up to the wedding shouldn’t be overlooked either.

Anyway, on to Jenn and Brad! These guys were so fun to hang out with, and now I really can’t wait until their wedding this September. We started our shoot on Roncesvalles Ave in Toronto, a place where Jenn and Brad visit often, as they live nearby. Its such a cute neighbourhood- definitely a good spot to take a summer stroll. After that we headed to High Park, where we found some of my favourite blossoms still in bloom and also dodged a territorial red winged black bird. After that, we headed down to Sunnyside beach where we had a little picnic and celebrated with some sparkling red wine! Such a lovely evening!
    Enjoy!

Tegan + Xavier – Kensington Market, Toronto Engagement

Tegan and Xavier are getting hitched in August and I can’t wait to spend their big day with them! We spent the afternoon wandering around Kensington Market and sneaking into back alleys, finding that perfect light. These two are so in love and so deserving of the happiness they share. Tegan is an extremely gifted singer (so good that I will likely beg her to sing at my own wedding- when the time comes!) so fingers crossed that she’ll grace us with her talents at some point during her big day in August. Congratulations you two!

  • Janice + Conor – Berkeley Field House, Toronto

Janice + Conor – Berkeley Field House, Toronto

This spring DIY wedding was a dream to photograph! Janice and Conor are such a fun and relaxed couple, and their personalities really shone through in all of their planning and prepping for their big day. My favourite part of this wedding was the way that Janice and Conor set up their day. It was so relaxed, partially due to their organized and helpful bridal party, and partially due to their decision to have a First Look. Janice and Conor arrived at the Berkeley Field House around noon, where they then got dressed and then had an intimate First Look on the rooftop. We then did their bridal portraits, bridal party and family photos. The rain held off all day, right until we finished our last family photo! We then went inside to capture a traditional Chinese tea ceremony, where Janice and Conor served tea to each of their parents. Because of how much time they allotted for photos before the ceremony, Janice and Conor were able to spend quality time with their friends in the bridal party and their family, and even sit down and have a bite to eat (which seems unheard of on most busy wedding days!) Guests were treated to a tented garden ceremony donned with yellow, blue and music sheet DIY bunting, and baby’s breath bundles lining the aisle. Table accents inside the Berkeley Field House included burlap runners, candles, mason jars tied with twine, baby’s breath, yellow tulips and white hydrangeas. I loved all of the gold chandeliers and white washed walls inside of the Field House too! The yellow ombré cake and yellow tulip bouquets were the perfect touch for springtime!

Conor and Janice did so much work to make their day really special and fitting for them. Conor designed the wedding invites and website himself, and also crafted the beautiful yellow and wooden table seating chart. The chalkboard letter bunting for the head table and the polaroid photo table were all DIY efforts as well. I love when a wedding comes together so well! This bridal party was a blast- I love when I feel like I’m one of the girls…plus they fed me croissants! Loryn of LC Special Events is a friend of Janice and Conor’s, so having a close friend as a planner was definitely part of their success! Liz from the Berkeley Field House was also a really great venue coordinator- she definitely had everything under control! I hope you enjoy looking at these photos as much as I enjoyed photographing them!
